Sabaoth.-Tbie word should nor we confounded in its pronunciation with Sabbuth, a word or so different signis cation. Sabaoth ought to be dlard in three syllables, by keeping the a and o separate and distinch. This, it must be confessed, 'ö not very easy to do, but is absoluiely necessary to prevent a very gross confusion of ideas, and a perversion of the serse.
Satan--There is some dispute among the learned about the quantity of the second syllable of this word when Latia or 'Greek, as may be seen in Labbe, but none about the first. As a perusal of the Observations on Greek and Latiu Accent and Quantity requires a more inti mate acquaintance with the nature of the voice than is generally brought to the study of that surhject, it may not be improper to lay before the reader such an explanation of speaking sounds as may enable him to distinguish between high and low, soft and low, forcibizness and length aud fecbleness and shortness, which are so often confounded, and which consequently produce such confusion and obscuriny among our best prosodists.
But as describing such sounds upon paper, as have no definite terms appropriated to them like those of music, is a new and difficult task, the reader must be requeste:l' to give as nice
al attention as possible to those soumds and indlertions of voice, which spontaneously annes themselves to certain forms of speech, and which, from their familiarity, ille apt to pass unno ticed. But if experience were out of the question, and we were only ac, mainied with the or ganic formation of huinait sounds, we must necessarily distinguish thein in'o fire kinds ; namely de monotone, or one soumd continuing a perceptible tine in one notc, which is the case with ull musical sounds ; a sound beginning low and siiding higher, or beginning higo and sliding lower, without any percoprible intervals, which is essential to all speaking sounds. The two last may be calicu sinple slides or infections; and these may be so combined as to begin with that which rises, and end with that which falls, or to begin with that which falls, and end with that which rises : aid if this combination of different inflections be pronounceu with one impulse or explosion of the voice, it may not improperly be called the circumiles or compound indection ; and this monotone, the two simple and che iwo compound inflections, are the only modifications independent on the passions, o? which the human voice is susceptible.
The different States of the Voicc. The modifications of the voice which have just been erumerated may be callel absolute; because they cannot be converted into each other, but mus remain lecidedly what they are; while different .aies of the voice, as high and low, loud and soit, quirk and slow, are only comparative terms, smce what is high in one case may be low in another, and so of the rest. Beside, therefore, the inullifications of voice which fave been described, the only varieties remaining of which the human vwice is capable, except those produced by the passions, are high, low, loul, soft, quick, slow, forcilile, and fpeble.' Though high and louil, and low and soft, arc frequently confounded yet, when considered distiuctly, their difference is easily understood; as, if we strike a larg bell with a deep tone, though it gives a very loud tone, ii will still be a low one; and if we striko a small well with a high tone, it will still be a higii tone, though the stroke ve ever so soft; a quick sone in music is that in which the same tone continutes but a short time, and a slow toue where it contizes longer; but in speaking, a quick tone is that when the slide rises from low to high, or from high to low, in ? shiort time, and a slow foue the reverse ; while furcible and feeble scern to be severaly compounded of two of these simple stares; that is, force seems to be loudness and quickness, either in a lighi or low tone also; aud feebleness seems to be suttness and slowness, either in a light or a low tonic likewise. As to the tons of the passions, which are so many and various, these, in the opinion of "ne of the best judiges in the kingdon, are qualilues of sound, occapioned by certain vibrations of the organs of speech, independent on high, low, loud, sott, quick, slow, orcible, or fechle: which last roay not improperly be called different quantities of sound.
It inay not, perhaps, be muorthy of observation, I ww low are these principles, which, by a diferent combination will cach other, produce dat almost mbouriucu variety of which human speech consists. The diferent quantities of sounil, as these different states of the voice may be called, inzy be combined so as to turn new varieties with any other that are not opposite to thema Thas high may be combined wiih either loud cr soft, quick or slow: that is, a high note may be sounded either in a loud or soit tone, and a low pole may be sounded either in a loud or a soft joue also, and each of these tones inay be pronounced either in a longer or a shorter timş; that is, more slowly or quickly; while forcible seems to imply a degree of loudness and quickness, and iceble, a degree of' sotuiess and slowness, cither in a high or a low tone. These combinations nuv, perhaps, be inore easily couceived by classing them in contrast with each other :
High, loud, quick.
Low, soft, slow. Forcible may be higli, louil, and quick: or low, loud, and quick. Feeble may be high soft and slow: or low, soft, and slow. The differeat combinations of these states, may be thus represented :

Low, suft, slow, feeble. When these states of the voice are combined with the five modifications of voice above mention ile varieties become exceedingly numerous, but far from being incalculable: perhape they lady aloount [for I leave it to arithmeticians to recken them exactly] to that numbir into which the ancients distinguished the notes of music, which, if I remeniher right, was about two huodred.
These different states of the voice, il joriy distinguished and associated, may serve 20 throw some sight on the nature of accent. His resignation was voluntary,
He made a róluntary resiguation. a both, the accent is on the first syllable. In the first sentence, the accented syllahle is bigheact ouder than the other syllables; and in the second, it is londer and lower than the rest. The sun nay be observed of the following question :
Was his resignation róluntury or involuntary? ahere the first syllable of the word voluntury is louder and lower than the succeeding syllables; and in the word inroluntary it is louder and higher. Those who have not ears sufficiently delicate to dis cern this difference, ought never to open their lips about the acute or grave accent, as they are pleased to call them; let them speak of accent as it relates to stress only, and not to clevation or depression of voice, and then they may spcak intelligibly.

I want of this discernment has betrayed Mr. Forster into obscurity and contradiction. 10 say jothing of his asserting that the English, Irish, and Scotch accent differ, [where accent can.no jossibly meau stress, for then English verse would not be verse in Ireland and Scotland,] what shall we think of his telling us, that in England we pronounce the word majesty with an acute accenų, soil long quantity upon the first syllable, and the two las syllables with the grave accent and short
antity; and that in Scotland this word is pronounced wici a grave accent, and long quantity on cloro first syllable, and with an acuie accent and short quantity on the las: ? Now, if by accent be ant stress, nothing is morrevident than that the English and Scotchi, with the exception of verù 8.1 words, place the accent on the same syllable; but if elevation be included in the idea of accent, It is as eviderit that the English pronounce the first syllable louder and higher than the two lasty ulica they pronounce the word cither singly, or as ending a sentence; as,

Diil ne dare to speak agains, we king'a majesty. 10 Wherc then is the dillerence, it will be asked, between the English and Scotch pronunciation' lauswer, precisely in this; that the Scotch are apt to adopt the rising circumflex and long quantity
where the English use the simple rising inflection and short quantity. Thus in the word majesty, a
well as in every oiher of the saine form, they generally adopt the rising inflcction, as in the twofint sentences, whether it end a question beginning with a verb, as, “ Is this the picture of his majesty ?!
or wlicther it end an affirmative sentence, as, “Tlus is the picture of his majesty". And it is the pre- ruleure of this long quantity with the rising intlection that forns the principal difference between he English and Scotch pronunciation.
11. Having thus endeavoured to ascertain the accent and quanti!y of vur own language, let ug 90.31 inquire into the nature of the accent and quantity of the ancients.t

The song quautity of the ancients must arise either from a prolongation of the sound of the sowel, or from that delay of voice which the pronunciation of two or more consonants in succession are supposed naturally to requirc. Now vowels were said to be either loug by naturr, or long by position. Those long by nature were such as were long, though succeeded by a single consonant, us the u in nuluru, and were a sort of exception to the general rule, for a vowel before a single con sonant was commonly short, as in every u in the word lumulus. What may tend to reconcile us still more to this dramatic music, is the sing-song manner, :s it is called, of pronouncing tragedy, which very generally prevailed before the time of Mr. Garrick, on which now prevails among some classes of speakers, and is preferred by then to, what we call, the more natural manner. This crawling, ununlaring pronunciation, is what the actors generally burlesque by repeating the live,
Tun ti tuin ti, tum ti tuu ti tunti: and though this mode of declaration is now so much despised, it is highly probable that it was for inerly held in estimation.s
* We have the strongest proof in the world that the ancient Greeks made use only of capital letters, that they were utterly ignorant of punctuation, and that there was not the least space between words or sentences, but that there was an equal continuatiou of letters, which the reader was obliged to decypher, without any assistance from poiv's or disLances. Without the clearest evidence, could we suppose, that while compustlion had reached the perfectwn it had done in Greece, orthography was in a state of barbarily worthy of the Cape of Good Hope ?
Can any thing give us a mure ludicrous idea than the practice of the ancienis in sometimes splitting a word at the ind of the line, and eonumencing the rext line with the latter part of the word ? This must have been nearly as ridiculous as the following English versos, in imitation of this absurd practice:
Pyrrhus, you lempt a danger higb, *Wnen you wouid steal from angry li- Oness her cubs, and soon shall ny
inglorions For know the Romans, you shall and By virtue more and generous kind- Ness, than by force or fortune blind,
victorious. Notwithstanding the hackneyed epithet of Gothic barbarity applied to verse in rhyme, is it not wonderful that a spe Hes of versification, approved by Italy, France, and Englanu, in their oest periods of poetry, sbould never once have seen tried by the Greeks and Romans ?---that they should never have straggled, either by chance, or for the sake of shange, into so pleasing a jingle of sounds! They who would write poems, and so lengthen or shorten the lines, as to form ases, wings, and altars, might, without any imputation on their taste, have, now and then, condescended to rhyne. In short, that the ancients should never have slid juio rhyme, is a circumstance which would never have been believ Zil, had it been possible to doubt it:acd I fear it must be classed with ibat lung catalogue of unaccounlables, with which their prosody, licir rhetoric, and their drama abound.
| Perhaps our unwillingness to believe that the ancient dramas were set to music, arises from a very mistaken 10Lion we have of their skill in that art. It is true we have not the same inaterials for judging of their music as we have of their poctry and sculpture; but their ignorance of counterpoini, and the poverty of their instruments, sufficiently show what little progress Wey had made in it. Those very few remains of their music which have reached us, con firm us in thw conjecture; and it is to the indefatigable pains of so good a scholar and so excellent a musician as Dr. Burney, that we are indebted for an illustration of it.
" At the end of a Greek edition of the astronomical poet, Aratus, called Phenomena," says Dr. Burney," and their Scho lia, published at Oxford in 1762; the anonymous editor, supposed to be Dr. John Fell, among several other pieces, has enriched the volume with three hymns, which he supposed to bave been written by a Greek poet called Dionysius; of which the first is addressed to the muse Calliope, the second to Apollo, and the third tc Nemesis; and these bymns are accompanieil with the notes of ancient music to which they used to be sung. "I know not whether justice has been
done to these neodlies; all I can say is, that no pains have been spared to place them in the clearest and most favourable point of view: and yet, with at the advantages of modern potes and modern measures, if I had been told that they came from the Cherukees or the Iloisentuis, I should not bave been sur prised at their excellence.
u I have tried them in every key ind in every measure that the feet of the verses would allow; and as it has been the opinion of some, that the Greek scale and music should be read Hebrew-wise, I have even inverted the order of the notes, but without being able to augment their grace
and elegance. The most charitable supposition that can be ada mitted concerning them is, that the Greck language being itseli accentuated and sonorous, wanted less assistance from cusical refinements than one that was niore harsh and rougb; and music being stili a slave to poetry, and wholly got verned by its feet, derired all its merit and effects from the excellence of the vere, and sweetness of the voice that sung, or rather recited it: for mellifuous and affecting voices nature bestows from time to time on some gifted mor tals in all the habiticle regioos of the earth; and eveu the natural
effusions of these must ever have been heard with delight. But as music , there needs no other proof of the poverty of ancient melody, than its being
confined to long and short syllables. We have some airs of the niost graceful and pleasing kin:, which will suiu
no arrangement of syllables to be found in any poetical nunibers, ancient or niovern, and which it is impossible to express by mere syllables in any language with which I am at all acquainted."
Dr. Burpey's conjecture, that the Greek music was entirely sulsservient to verae, accounts for the little attention which was paid 's it in a separate slale ; it accounts for the effects with which their music was accompanied, and for the total uselessless of counterpoint simple welody is the fittest music to accompany words, when we wish to understand what is sung; simple melody is the music of the great bulk of mankind ; and simple melody is never undervalo
