I already got a Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN and Sony SEL35F18. I mostly use it for my travel, not sure if I should get the zoom lens and sell away my 35mm.

I like the quality of prime lens but also want the flexibility of not changing the lens so often. Need some advice from all of you!

I really like mine. But it's no low light wonder, your Sigma 16mm and Sony 35mm will do better in that regard. I've got a bunch of lenses, but my main lenses are the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 and the Sony 18-105 f/4 G.

If you like the Sony 35mm and don't have to sell it to get additional funds, then keep it.

It's pretty big though. Also something you should remember it being a power zoom it'll reset to 18mm when you turn the camera off. Not an issue for me, but some might find it annoying. The zooming is smooth though and it's all internal as well. Very fast focusing lens as well and works great for tracking subjects (not all lenses can keep up with the A6000 or newer models).

Edit: I've had the 18-135mm briefly as well (came with the A6400) and it's a bit more compact, has a longer range but a variable aperture as well. I personally didn't really like the out of focus rendering of that lens. But it's a lens to consider as well and many now advise on getting the 18-135mm instead of the 18-105mm.

If you are taking more photos than videos, I would say go with the 18-135mm. Lighter, smaller, longer range and in my own experience, it is sharper. The zoom ring is manual so it is faster to operate than the electronic found in 18-105. The minimum focusing distance is also shorter and allows for bigger magnification than 18105. For travel photography, it is much more useful in a lot of ways. If you shoot more videos and use a gimbal, definitely goes with the 18-105mm.

I have to chime in and recommend the 18-105 f/4. The lens is as sharp as the 18-135, by most accounts, and it offers the extra stop by being a f/4. While the f/4 is only one stop, it really comes in handy in low light situations. I actually like the electronic zoom as well. Many people on this forum prefer a manual zoom but I have no issues it. It is also a fast focusing lens which makes it ideal for travel.

I agree with this ^ and it's a pretty common opinion on this forum.

But comparing primes vs. zooms is trickier. I use both, mostly because during the day when you have lots of light, the zooms are fine at f/5.6 and up. At night or indoors is where I still like to use fast primes at f/1.4 or f/1.8. So I travel with a normal zoom, a fast normal prime, and a wide angle lens. Perhaps the 18-135 and 16/1.4 can accomplish all you need, but it's tough to tell you to sell the 35 unless you don't use it.

The 18-105g is an absolutely great lens and a great value. The 18-135 is recommended as well, but I prefer the 105g for its fixed size and F4 throughout its range.

I have owned the 18-105 and it is good / sharp lens. Internal zoom is a big advantage specially when hand holding and you can manually zoom if you don't like using the Power zoom button. If you are leaning towards it, go for it, don't doubt your instinct!

I am not knocking down the 18-135 but initially when I store tested the two lenses on the same camera, i liked the results from the 18-105 more (natural skin tones, smoother bokeh). 18-135 is definitely more compact than 18-105

I love my 18-105. If I had to pick one lens to use with my a6500, this would be it. If I was starting from scratch again, though, it would be foolish not to consider the 18-135 - smaller and lighter, as others have pointed out - but there's something about the constant f/4 that I suspect would bring me back.

At 18/19 the 18-135 is faster, -1/3rd

At 19-27 the 18-135 is f4, same

At 27-40 the 18-135 is f4.5, +1/3rd

At 40-56 the 18-135 is f5, +2/3rd

56-105, 1 stop

105-135!

While the f/4 is only one stop, it really comes in handy in low light situations.

see above!

I actually like the electronic zoom as well.

For photographers e-zoom is not ideal, as well as the power consumption, its slow, fiddly and not great.

Many people on this forum prefer a manual zoom but I have no issues it. It is also a fast focusing lens which makes it ideal for travel.

Zoom lenses are truly great for travel. and the 18-105 is great. - especially if you shoot video and/or want the most bokeh/low light possible in that price range.

the 18-135 is a great lens, and should be considered as well if you want less weight, extra reach and don't mind the higher f-stop or lack of power zoom.

I have the 18-105 that I picked up a few years ago, and quite content with it.

glad I didn't have to make the decision today, as both lenses have their pros and cons, and both belong in the Sony lens lineup.

I've used the 18-105 quite a bit. I don't love the size, but it is deceptively lightweight. The internal zoom is nice and the constant f4 is a great feature. It's sharp enough to please me though I am not a super pixel-peeper. But even a pixel peeper would be impressed with the vast majority of the frame by the time you stop down to f5.6.

The autofocus is pretty solid on the lens as well. Though it is a power zoom, you can also twist the zoom ring to zoom pretty quickly. It provides a lot of flexibility and is a very solid walkaround lens. Very good image stabilization on this lens too. I can easily shoot 1/25 at 105mm without any effort and if I am trying, I can get sharp shots at 1/10 second at 105mm.

The main downsides in my view are that

  1. it is a bit long physically
  1. The power zoom starts off at 18mm with every power on cycle. So it's not a bad idea to bring an extra battery or two and leave the lens on if you're worried about missing a shot due to waiting for the delay from the power zoom.

The 18-135 wasn't available when I got the 18-105 so I can't weigh in on comparing the two lenses.

I really like my 18-105. It's been on many vacations with me and has been great. The 18-135 wasn't around when I bought my 18-105 but I wouldn't have bought it anyway as I don't like variable F stop zooms. As far as the power zoom always resetting to 18 at start up I actually like that. At least I know where it is when I turn on the camera instead of it being where ever it was the last time I used it and have no idea which local length I used. To each his own though. Pretty sure you can't go wrong with either.

In general, zoom lenses are not going to give you the quality of prime lenses. If you really want the highest quality zoom, you might have to go for that new $1400 Sony lens! But I did find that at f5.6, the 18-105 is very, very close to the resolution of my prime lenses (20mm/f2.8 and Sigma 30mm/f2.8). http://www.computingbits.com/photography/LensTest/testchart3.htm

The 18-105 wouldn't replace all the functionality of the 35/1.8, so if you like that lens, I'd say keep it, but when out and about, I also prefer a zoom, generally. Particularly with family and they already don't want to stop while you take photos. :-/

I think the weight and size are the main negatives I have against the 18-105 for travel. I take it even for short hikes, though. But for a long trip, I might want to go lighter/more compact. By the way, look at how many people like the 18-105G. It works well. --

My thoughts are largely in line with this. In addition, I would also add that the zoom ring can be moved a little TOO easily. If you're not careful you can change the focal length after locking the AF, and throw off the focus a little. Although it is deceptively light, as Shiny Object states, I did find that, that weight was distributed too much towards the end of the lens, which unbalanced the feel of the overall camera/lens combo, and put a bit of pressure on the muscles in the wrist around that knobbly bit (ulna, the diagrams call it).

It takes wonderful images in terms of colour, and sharpness (lacks a little depth, but it's OK), but in the end the weight distribution, size and power zoom got on my nerves. I got a Sony Zeiss 16-70mm, and have been much happier since. I'll sell the 18-105mm once I get the time. A great many other people are very happy with it though, so there's no reason to assume your experience will be the same as mine.

Agreed, the power zoom is annoying for photographers. It's not fast and if you use the ring, you have to fully spin it like twice to get from 18 to 105mm. Before the 18-135 came out, the 18-105 was a much cheaper zoom alternative to the Zeiss 16-70 so it made sense. But now, I would only recommend it for video/gimbal work, or if you have very specific use case for it.
