When creating an email address you should use the maximum allowed number of characters?

When adding usernames, group names, and group descriptions to Google Workspace or another Google Cloud account, use the following guidelines.

Usernames

  • Usernames can contain letters (a-z), numbers (0-9), dashes (-), underscores (_), apostrophes ('), and periods (.).

  • Letters in usernames must be lowercase. If you enter uppercase letters when creating a username, they are converted to lowercase letters.

  • Usernames can'tcontain more than one period (.) in a row, accents, accented letters, ampersands (&), equal signs (=), brackets (<,>), plus signs (+), or commas (,).
  • Periods (.) are not ignored in usernames the way they are in gmail.com accounts. If you create a user account called username, this user will not be able to receive messages addressed to user.name, or us.er.na.me, or any other combination of periods. To let a user receive mail with these variations, create an email alias for them.
  • Usernames can begin or end with non-alphanumeric characters except periods (.), with a maximum of 64 characters.
  • Because abuse and postmaster are reserved words, you can't use them as usernames or aliases. Learn more about reserved words.
  • First and last names support unicode/UTF-8 characters, with a maximum of 60 characters.

Group names and descriptions

  • Names can be up to 73 characters long.
  • Use names that make it easy to identify the group’s purpose.

  • Groups created in the Admin console: Names and descriptions can’t contain equal signs (=), brackets (<>), or ampersands (&).
  • Creating strong passwords

If you see "Username not allowed" when you sign up for your Google Account or Gmail, follow these guidelines.

Note: “Abuse” and “Postmaster” are reserved aliases, and you cannot use them as usernames or aliases. For more information, refer to our spam and abuse policy.

Character length

Choose a username 6–30 characters long. Your username can be any combination of letters, numbers, or symbols.

Special characters

  • Usernames can contain letters (a-z), numbers (0-9), and periods (.).
  • Usernames cannot contain an ampersand (&), equals sign (=), underscore (_), apostrophe ('), dash (-), plus sign (+), comma (,), brackets (<,>), or more than one period (.) in a row.
  • Usernames can begin or end with non-alphanumeric characters except periods (.). Other than this rule, periods (dots) don’t matter in Gmail addresses.

There's an upper limit on the number of characters in an email address

Updated on February 25, 2020

In early email systems, several email formats were tried. Only one survived, though, and that's the familiar (with TLD being the top-level domain such as .com, .org, .net, and .gov) format used today. The maximum length of an email address based on this format is 254 characters, although that wasn't always the case.

Character Limitations in an Email Address

Every email address consists of two parts. The username comes before the @ sign, and the domain name follows it. In "," the username is "person" and the domain name is "company.com."

The total length of an email address in the original standard was 320 characters. The standard limited the username to 64 characters and the domain name to 255 characters. (If you're doing the math, that adds up to 319. The final character is the @ symbol in between.)

This 320-character limit is different from the 254 figure because the current standard limits the total length of an email address to 256 characters, including punctuation. Some addresses, however, use angle brackets (<>), which take up two characters, leaving the maximum number of characters used in an email address at 254.

So, when creating a new email address, limit your username to 64 or fewer characters, and the total number of characters to 254. Just remember that the shorter the email address is, the easier it is for people to remember.

How many characters are allowed in an email address?

In addition to restrictions on syntax, there is a length limit on email addresses. That limit is a maximum of 64 characters (octets) in the "local part" (before the "@") and a maximum of 255 characters (octets) in the domain part (after the "@") for a total length of 320 characters.

What should be the maximum length of an email?

The final character is the @ symbol in between.) This 320-character limit is different from the 254 figure because the current standard limits the total length of an email address to 256 characters, including punctuation.
