Rolling Stone lần đầu giới thiệu top 500 ca khúc hay nhất mọi thời đại [The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time] vào năm 2004. Sau 17 năm, tạp chí âm nhạc làm mới danh sách này bằng cách thăm dò ý kiến của 250 nghệ sĩ, nhạc sĩ, nhà sản xuất, nhà phê bình, nhà báo... hàng đầu ngành công nghiệp âm nhạc. Mỗi khách mời lựa chọn 50 bài hát, tạo ra danh sách đề cử khoảng 4.000 ca khúc, sau đó Rolling Stone quyết định kết quả cuối cùng.
Các nghệ sĩ, nhạc sĩ và nhà sản xuất tham gia thăm dò ý kiến có những tên tuổi lớn, từ Angelique Kidjo đến Zedd, Sam Smith đến Megan Thee Stallion, M. Ward đến Bill Ward. So với bản năm 2004, danh sách có 254 ca khúc mới. Ngoài ra, bảng xếp hạng mới chứng kiến dòng nhạc rock và soul lên ngôi, phiên bản mới của danh sách 500 ca khúc hay nhất mọi thời ghi nhận nhiều xu hướng khác: hip-hop, modern country [nhạc đồng quê hiện đại], indie rock [nhạc rock độc lập], Latin pop, reggae, R&B...
Trong danh sách 500 bài hát hay nhất mọi thời đại, ca khúc Respect của "nữ hoàng nhạc soul" Aretha Franklin được bình chọn là bài hát hay nhất. Ban biên tập Rolling Stone viết ở phần mô tả ca khúc trong bảng xếp hạng công bố hôm 15/9: "Respect như chất xúc tác giúp biến các thể loại rock & roll, gospel và blues thành hình mẫu cho nhạc soul mà các nghệ sĩ ngày nay vẫn nhìn vào và học tập. Mariah Carey từng gọi Franklin là người dạy mình hát. Ca khúc cũng mang thông điệp mạnh mẽ về về quyền công dân và phụ nữ, rất hợp với hình ảnh ca sĩ từng ủng hộ tổ chức Black Panther và hát trong đám tang Martin Luther King Jr. Trong hồi ký năm 1999, Franklin viết rằng ca khúc phản ánh nguyện vọng của tất cả - từ những người lao động trên phố đến doanh nhân, lính cứu hỏa, giáo viên. Mọi người đều muốn được tôn trọng".
Respect lần đầu được phát hành trong album Otis Blue/Otis Redding Sings Soul [1965] của Otis Redding. Năm 1966, khi Franklin rời hãng thu âm Columbia và ký với hãng Atlantic, cô muốn thu âm ca khúc này cho album mới. Đĩa đơn phát hành tháng 4/1967 và trở thành sản phẩm âm nhạc đầu tiên của cô đứng nhất bảng xếp hạng thị trường Mỹ. Ca khúc cũng thành công tại nhiều quốc gia khác trên thế giới, vào top 10 bảng xếp hạng Anh. Aretha Franklin được mệnh danh "nữ hoàng nhạc soul" sau Respect.
Ca khúc từng giữ vị trí đầu tiên trong bảng xếp hạng trước – Like A Rolling Stone của Bob Dylan – tụt xuống vị trí thứ 4. Get Ur Freak On của Missy Elliott là ca khúc không có trong danh sách cũ xếp hạng cao nhất trong danh sách mới ở vị trí thứ 8. Dancing On My Own của Robyn là ca khúc chưa được phát hành khi danh sách cũ ra mắt năm 2004, giờ có vị trí cao nhất ở vị trí thứ 20.
Đặc biệt, đĩa đơn Dynamite của nhóm nhạc Hàn Quốc BTS xếp thứ 346 trong danh sách 500 ca khúc hay nhất mọi thời đại do tạp chí Rolling Stone công bố. Ấn bản danh tiếng nhận xét, Dynamite là bước ngoặt giúp 7 chàng trai xứ kim chi chinh phục khán giả toàn cầu. Đây là bài hát tiếng Anh đầu tiên của BTS và cũng là sản phẩm đầu tiên đưa nhóm nhạc lên vị trí quán quân bảng xếp hạng Billboard Hot 100.

Popularity: Charted singles and albums [with some consideration as to the era in which they took place to establish context - albums were not big in the 50's and early 60's for rock artists and most put no effort into them, black rock artists mostly did not pay full attention to them until the early 70's; certain styles received little radio airplay which negatively affect single success, such as metal and early rap; pre-1955 rock also was
made for and appealed to a racially segregated market, so the R&B Charts are more accurate as to what was popular within the rock community at the time, but that has to be balanced to reflect that post-1955 rock on the pop charts was not only competing with other rock, but also all of pop music as a whole].
It also includes sales figures and headlining appearances and so forth but these are considered secondarily. However, as with chart success, era and style specific context is factored in. In terms of concerts not all artistic styles are created equal. A vocal harmony group, no matter how popular, won't fill stadiums because their music doesn't translate well to the venue. Rap is harder to duplicate live.
It is based on roughly a 80/20 split for US/UK. In cases where an artist undeniably has a very high level of worldwide popularity, that can be used as a tiebreaker.
Influence: Primary Influence, which is worth more, is for true innovation, the starting point of a new style or method of singing, songwriting, playing, performance, production, stage shows, arranging, etc., which consequently goes on to become widespread at some point in the future. The origins of the innovation are what matters most here, not necessarily who others credit with exposing them to it and so it is necessary to trace back all things to their origins as best as possible. Secondary Influence is for those who did NOT innovate, but whose application in their own work of an earlier innovation served to popularize it to a far greater extent. It is not always intentional, but when it happens the societal parameters often shift in some ways. Basically, how far an artist's career penetrated into society. This is the hardest to get, simply because it is difficult to affect such change, but it something that often separates the elite from the merely great and is ultimately a major part of the lasting legacy of rock music as a whole.
