A theory that predicts that as relationships develop, disclosure moves from shallow levels to more intimate levels and communication increases in breadth and depth.
Self-disclousre make people vulnerable, the act conveys both trust and closeness, and helps people uncover similarities and reduce uncertainty about one another. When the exchanges of disclosure are favorable, people will want to get to know each other even more. Thus, according to social penetration theory, self-disclosure typically increases gradually as people get to know, like, and trust one another.
If people do not develop trust or liking, self-disclosure will not progress very far, and the relationship will stagnate or terminate. Stagnated relationships will end up in either superfical layer or intimate layer.
