Top 10 places to visit in the world

Avid travelers know that choosing a destination is arguably the most important part of the trip-planning process.

While some cities are the perfect lively setting for those looking to enjoy high-end shopping and fascinating museums, others might cater more to outdoorsy types in search of their next adventure.

Most of us though, are looking for a place that’ll offer us a taste of everything – from historical landmarks to unique experiences that’ll make the trip remarkable.

Luckily, the world is full of diverse, multi-faceted destinations that promise the experience of a lifetime for all tourists.

U.S. Travel recently released its newest ranking of the best cities to visit in the world based on factors like entertainment variety, natural beauty, dining options, cultural attractions, and readers’ votes.

These are the cities that topped the list:

10. Cape Town

Cape Town, South Africa’s legislative capital, is also one of the country’s biggest international hotspots.

After exceeding pre-pandemic tourist arrivals this past July, Cape Town has promptly re-established itself as one of the fastest-growing destinations on Earth.

After all, the area boasts the kind of natural beauty, vast biodiversity, and historical background that most tourists are willing to pay good money to experience.

Hikers will love the Van Riebeeck and Lion’s Head trails, and those who aren’t afraid of heights will have the time of their lives on the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway.

If you’re eager to enjoy the city’s cultural and historical scene, you should move Robben Island and The District Six Museum right to the top of your itinerary, preferably with a stop at the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens.

9. Sydney

Boasting both idyllic beaches and a lively city scene, Sydney is the best destination for those looking to escape the winter blues this upcoming season.

Classic landmarks like the Sydney Opera House, the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Royal Botanical Garden, and the Queen Victoria Building are not to be missed.

However, while you’re here, you might also want to take advantage of more contemporary attractions like the White Rabbit Gallery, Carriageworks, and the Barangaroo Reserve.

8. Barcelona

Famous for its stunning architecture, world-class cuisine, and dreamy Mediterranean beaches, the Spanish city continues to draw in legions of visitors even as the peak season comes to a close.

Whether you choose to spend your days exploring the Gothic Quarter, admiring Gaudi’s architecture, or enjoying local delicacies, you’re sure to have the time of your life in Barcelona.

If time allows for it, consider visiting nearby destinations like Monserrat, Sitges, Tarragona, and Costa Brava – the choice comes down to the type of vacation you’re looking to enjoy.

7. Honolulu

No “Best Cities In The World” list would be complete without Hawaii’s famous capital.

Those looking to sunbathe on idyllic beaches, take surfing lessons, or simply stand back and enjoy their life in island time will find Honolulu to be just the right destination.

Since American citizens flying from the U.S. to Hawaii don’t need a passport, the capital is also the perfect setting for a last-minute fall or winter getaway.

6. Amsterdam

The Dutch capital is undoubtedly one of the liveliest, most exciting cities in all of Europe.

Featuring bike-friendly streets and dozens of cultural and historical landmarks, Amsterdam is the perfect destination for those looking to experience the quintessential fall city break.

You won’t want to miss out on the capital’s famous canals or the Anne Frank House.

However, if you do decide to go to Amsterdam this upcoming season, I’d recommend planning your trip sooner rather than later, or, at the very least pack heavy.

Don’t let The Netherlands’ low altitude fool you; the winds here can be frigid, so you’ll want to dress accordingly before setting off on a long sightseeing trip.

5. Vancouver

If a trip to Europe seems like overkill, head up north and experience Vancouver, a city known for its laid-back atmosphere, whale-watching opportunities [these only last through October, though], and lush green spaces.

Outdoor enthusiasts won’t want to miss out on the Capilano Suspension Bridge.

4. Tokyo

Tokyo is one of the most visually stimulating cities in the world, featuring famous neon-clad skyscrapers and hundreds of colorful shops and cafes lining every street.

Since Japan was recently named the safest country on Earth, this is the perfect time for solo travelers to experience the East Asian hotspot.

3. London

Now that our focus has been turned away from tropical beaches and Mediterranean cafes, it might be time to enjoy the perfect Western European city break that London provides.

Between Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, the West End Theater, the British Museum, the Tower of London, and at least a dozen other must-see attractions, you’ll be spoilt for choice when planning your itinerary.

2. Rome

There’s a reason why Rome is Italy’s most visited city, reigning over some pretty stiff competition.

Featuring some of the world’s most remarkable historical sites [The Colosseum, the Pantheon], stunning architecture [Fontana di Trevi, Castel Sant’Angelo], and mouth-watering cuisine, the city needs to be experienced at least once in a lifetime by all travel enthusiasts.

1. Paris

The list wouldn’t be complete without the world’s most visited destination – Paris.

Though, by now, the French capital might seem a bit overcommercialized, the charm, architectural allure, and romantic feel that have drawn in record numbers of tourists for centuries are still as present as ever.

Must-see attractions include the Eiffel Tower, the Notre Dame Cathedral, the Seine River, the Louvre Museum, and the Arc de Triomphe.
