What is Total Quality Management (TQM)?

Quality management is a proven method for improving organizational performance and meeting or exceeding customer expectations. Quality assurance programs differ across industries and manufacturing or service-based companies, but there are common components. To be effective over the long term, quality management systems must be supported by personnel at all levels of a business.

Management Support

  1. Quality is as much a mindset as it is a systematic approach to process improvement and product or service quality. Senior leadership must cultivate and support quality assurance initiatives for process improvement to occur. This includes creating a manual outlining the organization’s policy toward quality and providing training for employees. Optimizing systems takes patience, understanding and a willingness to adapt. Sometimes front-line personnel become comfortable in their ways and end up resisting change. With the right education and support from senior leaders, system optimization is possible.

Customer Focus

  1. One of the major principles of quality assurance is the focus on the customer. Effective quality management helps employees meet customer requirements in a formal, systematic way that is rooted in facts rather than conjecture. While some leaders focus on bottom-line profit and short-term monetary gains, quality assurance teaches them to instead focus on customer satisfaction and long-term strategies for improving organizational performance. Quality management is scientific in nature incorporating elements of six sigma, lean and other quality theories into a cohesive approach to process improvement.

Process Approach

  1. Looking at a company’s operations from the right perspective is a key component of quality management. The process approach involves looking at a business as a system or set of processes. In this way, employees and leaders are able to identify waste and optimize operations while also cutting costs and improving customer satisfaction. A major contributor to this way of thinking was W. Edwards Deming, who is famous for creating “The System of Profound Knowledge” and his contributions to the field of quality assurance. Good quality management focuses on systems instead of blaming people for errors, defects or rework.

Continual Improvement

  1. Deming’s “The Fourteen Points for the Transformation of Management” describes a number of principles for improving quality management including guidance on continual improvement. The fifth point states, “Improve constantly and forever the system of production and service, to improve quality and productivity, and thus constantly decrease costs.” Organizations that adopt a philosophy of continual improvement are able to enhance their competitive advantage in the marketplace through superior product or service quality.

What are the three 3 components of a quality management plan?

PMI PMBOK breaks the practice of quality management into three processes: Quality Planning (QP), Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC). Overarching these three processes is the concept of continuous improvement by planning, doing, checking, and acting to improvements project quality.

What are the 3 components of quality for a manufactured product?

They are (i) quality planning, (ii) quality control, (iii) quality assurance, and (iv) quality improvement. Quality planning is the process for 'identifying which quality standards are relevant to the product and determining the procedures and techniques to satisfy them'.

    What are Quality Assurance Components?.
Confirm that everything is operating as it was agreed upon during the quality planning stage..
Measure how effective your pre-determined processes are and confirm that all compliance needs are being met..
Take note of any lessons learned..

What are the 4 components of a process?

These four critical items are: (1) Process Definition, (2) Process and Activity Roles, (3) Available Tools and (4) Training. Plain and simple reality- these elements are inseparably linked.
