- The 2023 Subaru Outback has a slightly different front end and some technology upgrades.
- The Onyx Edition is now available with the naturally aspirated base engine, not just the turbo.
- Updated Outback models will be on sale later in the year.
Subaru is making some small changes to the Outback for the 2023 model year, but it's still very much recognizable as the lifted all-wheel-drive wagon with outdoorsy vibes that we've come to know over the years. The front end looks slightly different and the driver-assistance features are more advanced than before, but the naturally aspirated and turbocharged versions of Subaru's 2.5-liter boxer-four are unchanged and the interior is mostly the same as well.
The new front end looks a bit more modern and looks somewhat like the electric 2023 Subaru Solterra to our eyes. The bigger grille, reworked headlights, and different bumper will apply to all 2023 Outback models except the off-road-oriented Wilderness trim, which has a different front-end look anyway. Subaru also says it has redesigned the wheel-arch body cladding to be more "functional" but we don't really know what that means.
The standard EyeSight driver-assistance features are upgraded thanks to new software, and a wider field of view for the cameras—this is all meant to make the systems smoother to operate under a wider range of conditions.
Subaru will still offer the 2023 Outback in base, Premium, Limited, and Touring trims. The blacked-out Onyx Edition is now available with the standard naturally aspirated 182-hp 2.5-liter boxer-four engine; it was previously only available with the 260-hp turbocharged version of this engine. Pricing hasn't been announced yet but it will likely rise a few hundred dollars compared with the current Outback's $28,320 starting price.

2023 Subaru Outback Wilderness Changes At-A-Glance
The 2023 Subaru Outback Wilderness will be the same excellent mix of on-road comfort and off-road conquering capabilities you know and love from 2022.
The Outback lineup will look slightly different for the 2023 model year. For starters, you'll notice that the headlights are sleeker, comprised of advanced LED bulbs that will help light the way even in the darkest forests. Beneath them, the new, rugged cladding will create a more powerful look that reflects this model's adventurous spirit.
For 2023, a new Subaru Outback for sale will make its capabilities known with a redesigned front fascia, incorporating a wider presence-making grille, the new LED headlights, and new LED fog lights to boot. With a rugged front bumper and many more powerful enhancements, the 2023 Subaru Outback is ready for it all.
While these changes apply to the overall Outback lineup, the previous Outback Wilderness ran with the model's style and tweaked it with exclusive, distinct upgrades. We haven't received a glimpse of how the 2023 Subaru Outback Wilderness will make this overall model redesign its own or if its 2022 styling will carry on, but either way, it'll look like it's ready for action.
