The MSI GS70 2QE Stealth Pro (AED 8990) is the latest in the small but growing niche of ultraportable gaming machines. These are laptops that pack gaming capability into slim, light designs with efficient mobile components and vastly better battery life than the average gaming rig.

The GS70 2QE Stealth Pro is impressive in that regard, offering real gaming on the go, but compared with other portable systems, it's a pretty close race. You'd be forgiven for thinking that the GS70 2QE Stealth Pro was a business laptop of some sort.

The slim design has a brushed aluminum lid and chassis, with a silver finish that is a bit different from the normal jet-black or bright colours seen on most gaming notebooks. The GS70 2QE Stealth Pro is just that, stealthy, because the conservative-looking design conceals a surprisingly sophisticated gaming-focused design.

Weighing around 2.66-kgs, the GS70 2QE Stealth Pro is one of the lightest 17-inch gaming notebooks we've reviewed, as well as the slimmest. Measuring just 418.5-by-287-by-21.99mm, it's slimmer and lighter than most gaming laptops out there on the market.

The keyboard is no mere collection of chiclet keys. It's a SteelSeries original, with multiple multicoloured lighting zones, which can all be customized to your desired colour scheme. It also features anti-ghosting, which allows you to press dozens of keys simultaneously without the keyboard locking up or slowing input to a crawl.

The 17.3-inch display offers 1920-by-1080 resolution, and looks great, thanks to an anti-glare matte finish on the screen, which prevents any of the mirror-like reflections seen on glass-covered displays. It won't offer the deep, deep blacks that a glass-fronted display will, but I had no real complaints during use, even when playing extremely dark games, like Batman: Arkham Origins.

Joining the high-quality display is a superb sound system, with two stereo speakers built into the hinge that offer crisp, clear sound, and even some rumble, thanks to an integrated subwoofer on the underside of the laptop. The sound is further enhanced by Dynaudio.

For such a slim chassis, the GS70 2QE Stealth Pro has a lot of features baked in. There are four USB 3.0 ports (including one with charging capability), headphone, mic and S/PDIF jacks. HDMI output and two mini-DisplayPort connections allow you to connect up to three independent external monitors. A Kensington lock slot means that you can secure the laptop to prevent someone from walking off with it when you're not looking.

You also have Gigabit Ethernet, thanks to a Killer DoubleShot networking adapter, which offers both Gigabit LAN and dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi. Bluetooth 4.0 + HS is available for wireless connection to headsets, speakers, and peripherals.

The GS70 2QE Stealth Pro is also equipped a Super Raid 2 384GB SSD (mSATA3) and a 1TB (SATA) drive running at 7200-rpm for game installs and media storage. The system comes with Windows 8.1.

The MSI GS70 2QE Stealth Pro is configured to offer potent performance on the go. It has the latest 4th generation Intel Core i7 processor, which has been made for these sorts of ultraportable designs. The combination of the CPU and 16GB of DDR III RAM helped the GS70 2QE Stealth Pro score some good points in PCMark.

In multimedia tasks, the system offered more than adequate performance for the user who wants to do some photo or video editing between gaming sessions. On the graphics side, the GS70 2QE Stealth Pro is outfitted with Nvidia's Geforce GTX 970M discrete GPU for gaming. With 3GB of dedicated memory, the Nvidia GPU offers plenty of horsepower.

As an ultraportable, one of the best features of the GS70 2QE Stealth Pro is its battery life. It lasted 4 hours 12 minutes on our standard battery rundown test. Compared with most gaming notebooks, this is phenomenal. Separate from the standard test, I also spent time playing games on battery power. When I played Batman Arkham Origins, the laptop lasted 2:43, an impressive amount of time for any gaming system.

The MSI GS70 2QE Stealth Pro demonstrates just how far the ultraportable gaming scene has come along. The portability and battery life is impressive, and hence, it is highly recommended for gamers who want an ultraportable system.

The MSI Gs70 2QE comes packaged very well as we would expect, opening up the main box that has the notebook inside and we can see it is wrapped in a cloth-like material to prevent scratches, then it is also wrapped in plastic to help further prevent any damage being done to it. MSI have gone to great lengths to make sure their notebooks are properly protected for shipping purposes but have also done a good job at keeping the packaging to a minimum.

Removing the laptop from the box reveals 2 smaller black boxes beneath it and there is also one on the side as well. These boxes are where all the paperwork and the charger are stored for safe keeping during transit.

As mentioned opening up the smaller black boxes will reveal a host of paperwork such as warranty info, quick start guide, recovery function, a disk that contains a user manual and drivers and some other useful information. This is also where users will find the charger for the GS70 2QE, the charge is quite slim considering the notebook it is tasked with powering, a nice touch.

As far as typical accessories go, the only thing you will find bundled with the GS70 2QE is a sleeve to store the notebook in for safe keeping.

The exterior design of the GT70 2QE is very sleek and stylish as it should be considering it is the thinnest and lightest (at time of review) 17″ gaming notebook. On the top cover, MSI have included their normal logo along with their gaming badge.

Opening it up and as always there is a nice protection cloth covering the keyboard to make sure everything is kept in tip-top shape when not in use.

MSI have done an amazing job to keep the sleek and elegant look going throughout the GT70 2QE. Removing the protective cover from the keyboard reveals a nice full-size keyboard with a full-size numpad and the track/touchpad is nice and big which should come in handy. Aside from this there is not a whole lot going on, there is of course a power button above the keyboard and down to the bottom left are some LED indicator lights to let users know some of which features are currently being used.

On the right-hand side of the laptop are 2 x USB3.0 ports, card reader and the DC input to plug the power adapter into. We can also make out on of the cooling vents.

Over to the left side of the laptop and there is a bit more fun going on over here! We have the LAN, HDMI 2x mini display ports that support 4Kx2K output, 2 more USB3.0 ports and the audio inputs/outputs.
