Nature republic aloe vera gel review năm 2024

Seriously, in a lot of products that claim to soothe the skin, you’re likely to find aloe vera as the key ingredient.

I’ve known the benefit of aloe vera, especially for the hair, since as long as I can remember. My mom applied real aloe vera gel directly from the actual plant on to my scalp – we had the plant on our backyard – so that my hair would be thick and healthy. Then I continued to do it by myself until my high school years, I guess. And if I still had some aloe vera left, I liked to put it on my skin. I didn’t know what it would do to my skin, all I knew was just it made my skin felt soft and cool.

So when I first saw the aloe vera gel product by Nature Republic – which was during my college years – I frowned. I just began my Korean skin care journey so everything felt exciting but seeing the product was just puzzling for me. Why would you want to pay for something you can grow on your own backyard? Anyway, over the time I learned that people actually love the product, and I came to understand that using readily apply product is far more convenient than using the raw ingredient.

Still, I thought, it was just aloe vera, what wonder could it possibly does to my skin? I had never felt the need to try the product, until recently. In my post about Clean & Clear Essentials Foaming Facial Wash I told you about the worst breakout I’ve ever had, and how my friend recommended me to use something that would soothe my skin. My mind then just went straight to Nature Republic Aloe Vera Gel. I know that there are so many products like this out there – in fact, I feel like now almost every brand releases their own product of aloe vera gel, some with higher percentage of aloe vera than this one but still, Nature Republic has been the first brand I know to have this kind of product so somehow I was biased toward them. My other reason was that my favorite beauty YouTuber (or vlogger or influencer, whatever people call them now), Suhay Salim, basically swears by this product, on how it had really helped her with her acne and how it has been part of her holy grail. So for me, Nature Republic it is.

Packaging

Nature Republic has 250 ml of the product packed inside a fresh, green tube with flip-cap. Before coming up with tube packaging, Nature Republic used plastic jar containing 300 ml of the product. I don’t know if they still produce both packaging now, or only the tube one. I personally prefer the tube one because I can just squeeze the product out – I know a lot of people don’t like jar packaging because they think it’s unhygienic but actually I don’t really mind that. It’s just I don’t like getting the product under my nail, plus, I find tube packaging allows me to better control the amount of product I want to use, and it’s more travel friendly.

Securely sealed!

I really appreciate this kind of seal they put on their products. I love to know that the product I purchase is safely contained inside the packaging before it gets to my hand. Nature Republic is not the only one doing this, I found it on Innisfree facial wash products too, and also on some other brands. For all the other brands that haven’t done this with their packaging, respectfully, please step up your game (I’m looking at you, St Ives).

Ingredients

You can see the ingredients list on the picture above, and this is the CosDNA analysis of the product. I think the things that are worth mentioning include:

  1. Alcohol is the second ingredient so if your skin hate it, maybe it’s better to skip the product. My sensitive, dehydrated skin however, doesn’t have any problem with it.
  2. There are so many moisturizing agent in the ingredients, other than the aloe vera itself, which I think is a good thing, I mean, a lot of the 8% (since the 92% is the aloe vera) is actually moisturizer, not some irritating, questionable ingredients.
  3. It has Mentha Viridis Extract, which may be where the cooling sensation comes from.
  4. It also has Sodium Hyaluronate, which maintain and attract water when applied topically on the skin, giving the result of smoother, softer skin.
  5. It contains fragrance.

One other thing that I noticed is not something important but I just find it rather funny: usually we find water as the first, or at least one the the first ingredients but in this product, water is actually the third ingredient from the bottom.

Appearance and Smell

I think of the reason why aloe vera gel is adored by so many people is thanks to its uniquely light and refreshing texture, that feels soooo dreamy on the skin, especially when you hate having even the slightest greasy feeling on your skin (like me). And since it’s not greasy at all, I don’t mind if the product gets into my hair a little bit, since I always apply all of my facial skin care product up to the hairline. Also, personally I just love to look at that transparent gel on my finger. It looks (and feels) like a drop of morning dew.

The amount of the gel I showed you on the picture is the amount I usually use on my face, but when I used it as sleeping mask, I used that amount of gel for only one part of the face. For me, parts of my face are: forehead until the temples, left cheek, right cheek, nose until above the lips, and chin. So…one, two, three… five parts in total. So, five times more of the gel. I’ll explain more about how I use the aloe vera gel later.

Can you see how the gel spreads all over the back of my hand? A little really goes a long way with this gel.

About the scent, many people say that they could smell how strong the alcohol is, but I don’t find it that way. I absolutely love the scent. It’s sooooo refreshing, it feels like it refreshes my soul, lol. Even my boyfriend loves the smell! His face literally lit up when he smelled it, it was so cute. But of course, it’s a lot stronger than the smell of the real aloe vera. Pick up the plant and smell it, it would definitely smell far more faint. This is not necessarily a bad thing, though. I mean, it’s just the same with any products that has green tea or roses or almond or strawberry or any other plants as its key ingredient. Pick up the real ingredient and of course it won’t smell as strong as the product.

Performance

These are how I like to use the product:

  • When I first began to use it, I liked to apply it as sleeping mask. And I seriously didn’t apply anything else on my face, so it was micellar water –> facial wash –> aloe vera gel. I applied like a ton of it, like I said before, a pea-sized amount for each part of my face. Because I applied a lot of it, after the product got absorbed into my skin, it left a slight tacky feeling, but I didn’t mind because it still felt light and wasn’t greasy at all. I think this is the best way to use it when I have quite severe inflammation on my face (which I haven’t experienced anymore, thanks to my new routine) because my main focus will be to soothe my skin. Plus, when you have a lot of inflammation, sometimes it doesn’t feel comfortable to layer a lot of products, especially if they’re heavy (for example, my Glysolid cream. I stayed away from it when my face was still terribly inflamed). The aloe vera gel calms and hydrates my skin while still allowing it to breathe.
  • As cooling mask after exfoliating. I apply a bit more than a pea-sized amount of the gel after scrubbing my face with St Ives Nourished & Smooth Oatmeal Scrub+Mask. Although the scrub is gentle and I scrub gently, sometimes my skin still feels a bit hot afterward. Applying the aloe vera gel really helps calm my skin. I think, this product will also be great to use as after-sun care.
  • As substitute for hydrating toner. I currently don’t have hydrating toner, so I use this instead. I apply pea-sized amount all over my face and massage it into my skin until all the tackiness is gone, leaving my skin completely cool and soft. After that, I repeat the process once more, before continuing with my skin care routine.

What it does to my skin:

  • Soothing? Definitely. My skin was like… furious before, and the aloe vera gel has calmed it down, preventing further inflammation.
  • Healing acne? Yes, partly. My skin flared up with different kinds of acne, and the aloe vera gel really helped in getting rid of the whiteheads and pustules quickly; they dried up and disappeared within three days since the first time I used the aloe vera gel. As with the papules and nodules, the aloe vera did helped reduce them slowly (I think this is thanks to the calming properties) thus making them less and less painful but it still took awhile until the they were completely flattened and healed, so the effect wasn’t as dramatic as with the whitehead and pustules.
  • Hydrating? Yes but not moisturizing, despite the claim on the packaging: “Soothing and Moisture”. So actually, it’s not enough when used alone, even if I use a lot of it. To understand the difference between the two, you can read this article. This is why I no longer use it as my sleeping mask, now that my inflammation has gone, although if someday the inflammation is back (which I hope it won’t), I think I will revert to that routine again. But thanks to the light texture, the aloe vera gel can be used along with other skin care products, including moisturizer. I’ve been applying it prior to Laneige Water Sleeping Mask (review coming up soon!) and I’ve been loving the result so much, more than when I used the sleeping mask alone.

Conclusion

In my opinion, this is a totally recommended product if you need something to cool, soothe, and hydrate your skin, regardless if you have dry skin or oily skin – I think both types of skin can benefit from this product. On my sensitive skin, despite some of the ingredients (alcohol and perfume), the product has given me no negative effect whatsoever. In fact, it helped a lot in taking care of my inflammation and giving my skin a significant boost of hydration. I love this product for its soothing and hydrating properties so I think I will keep using it. Plus, it’s so affordable. I bought mine for less than IDR 100,000. Such a win!
