Canon 28-70 f2.8 l đánh giá năm 2024

I believe this lens was only made for a few years and quite some time ago. I haven't found any good reviews of this lens so I thought I'd see if anyone here has any thoughts. I already have the EF 24-105 f 4 MII L but I'd like a little more speed. The 28-70 has no IS but I'd be pairing it with the R6 which has IBIS. This appears to have worked well on the lens I am considering. I've found one at a local camera shop and took it out for a test drive.

Sample shots welcome.

Re: Your Thoughts on Canon EF 28-70 f 2.8 L

Being an f2.8 L lens it will still be very good. Wide open it may be a touch soft, but close it to match the f4 of your current zoom and it looks like it will be an improvement on the 24-105/II.

The f2.8 aperture will provide superior subject isolation and save you 1 stop in ISO.

Apparently at the time it was a significant improvement over the 28-80/2.8-4 L. The only significant improvement with the two newer variants appears to be at the long end, and likely weather sealing.

I doubt the one stop difference will mean much on an R mount body, but the subject isolation may very well be worthwhile. Perhaps keep your zoom for zooming and add an even faster prime at a focal length you use a lot. Get more isolation and another stop or two of light.

I was close to buying one in mint condition some years ago, but the requested price was too high for me. The construction and optical performance is almost identical to the 24-70L version I, and I have seen one test/comparison where the 28-70 had the edge at 70mm, and was better at 28mm than the 24-70 was at 24mm.

Re: Your Thoughts on Canon EF 28-70 f 2.8 L

Some comments from Roger Cicala of Lensrentals.com regarding original Canon EF 28-70 F/2.8 L.

From "A Peek Inside the Canon 24-70 f/2.8 Mk II" and "Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 II Resolution Tests", September 11, 2012.

"It definitely has some reliability issues and a lot of copy-to-copy variation, at least some of which relate to its design".

"I’ve written for years about how much copy-to-copy variation there is in the original 24-70 f/2.8 and how it requires optical adjustment almost any time it’s dropped or misused in the slightest".

Seems to be about Canon EF 24-70 f2.8 L

Those discussions seem to be about the 24-70/2.8 L.

They were comments about the original 24-70, 2.8 L during evaluation of the L II lens. It may be confusing because of the way I presented the information.

That is such an easy mistake to make. Honestly, when I took the lens out from the shop to take a few shots in the neighborhood, for some reason I thought I had the 24 to 70. I dialed it back to minimum focal length and thought well this isn't very wide. Then I looked down and realized it was a 28 to 70. It also highlighted for me how much of a difference those 4 mm can make.

You clearly asked about Canon's EF 28-70 f 2.8 L, disregard my mistaken post about their original 24-70, 2.8 L lens.

Re: Your Thoughts on Canon EF 28-70 f 2.8 L

I've never owned or shot the lens, but I was considering getting one recently and did some digging on it. Optically it's still a great lens and compares very favorably to lens that replaced it, but there are several items to be aware of:

1. There is a known issue with the glue in the lens elements that deteriorates and cause a 'foggy' appearance to the glass. I don't know if this is strictly from age or if there's a combination of factors that causes the phenomenon but it's quite common. Check the lens you're considering VERY closely, as once it starts it's like rust on a car...it's never going away and only going to get worse.

2. It's long out of support from Canon. If anything breaks (or it gets lens fog), getting parts or service will be a huge gamble. Independent repair shops are the only option now and spare parts are drying up.

I decided not to get one, but if you come across a screaming good deal on a clean copy you might have a gem. Just be prepared to write it off as a total loss if anything ever happens to it.

Ironically

Ken Rockwell did a review in January of 2021 of the (1989-1993) EF28-80L 2.8-4 . Regardless what was said above it has a stellar reputation and is quite sharp. I still have pristine copy & use one on an R6 and love it regardless of no camera correction data available. Ken had mentioned in email he was going to add the 28-70L shortly, I guess better late than never. You can probably find personal reviews on 28-70L at reviews at Fred Miranda. Both these lens can be found through Japan resellers on ebay but you would need to find lens listed w no fungus/haze or Balsam separation. I think the 28-70L was/is notorious for separation

I used to find it useful to use Flickr to search groups or tags of a particular older lens to see actual photography w them. There used to be a Flickr page called pixelpeeper that linked gear w photos on their site but sadly I think it was removed.
