Nikkor 17 55 2.8 review năm 2024

An standard zoom for Nikon's APS-C DX format DSLRs, the 17-55mm F2.8 covers an equivalent focal length range of 25-82mm, and offers a constant maximum aperture of F2.8. Its ring-type SWM focus motor means that AF is fast and silent. Designed for use on Nikon's early professional DSLRs, the dust and moisture-sealed 17-55mm F2.8 is outclassed optically by newer lenses like the (admittedly slower) AF-S Nikkor 16-35mm F4 VR, but remains a decent performer and one of the most solid lenses in Nikon's DX lineup.

Distortion

The AF-S 17-55 mm shows a quite typical distortion characteristic for a lens in this class. At 17mm there is some relatively pronounced barrel distortion changing to moderate pincushion distortion towards the long end of the zoom range. At 24mm both forces even out with virtually no distortion at this focal length.

Vignetting

The AF-S 17-55mm DX is a reduced image circle lens (APS-C) and typical for such lenses so vignetting is somewhat more pronounced compared to full frame lenses. As to be expected the problem is most significant at 17mm @ f/2.8 where the vignetting exceeds 1.2EV at the image borders. The issue eases towards the 55mm end of the zoom range but vignetting remains relatively high here. However, from f/4 & up the issue is well under control for such a lens.

MTF (resolution)

As to be expected for a lens in this price class the AF-S 17-55mm DX is a pretty impressive performer regarding resolution but it is not a lens without flaws. The center resolution of the lens is extremely high straight from the max. aperture regardless of the focal length. At medium aperture settings it reaches the resolution limits of the D200 sensor. At 17mm the borders as well as the extreme borders are pretty decent even at f/2.8 and very good at medium aperture settings. Unfortunately there's a weak spot at 24mm where the extreme borders are quite soft at f/2.8 but from f/4 and up they catch up quite nicely. At 35mm the borders are on a pretty high level straight from f/2.8. Same goes for the 55mm setting though the borders don't really reach the high levels of the other tested focal lengths anymore.

The lens exhibited a quite high degree of residual spherical aberrations (focus shift when stopping down) at 24mm as well as strong field curvature at 17mm.

Please note that the MTF results are not directly comparable across the different systems!

Below is a simplified summary of the formal findings. The chart shows line widths per picture height (LW/PH) which can be taken as a measure for sharpness. If you want to know more about the MTF50 figures you may check out the corresponding Imatest Explanations

Why does the Nikon 17

Optics and construction get a "10", but overall only "9" because of the back-focus issue. Write your own user review for this lens! Looking for a Nikon 17-55mm lens review?

What is the best Nikon DX lens?

Gary Wolstenholme reviews the premium DX lens from Nikon, the Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S lens. Find out how it performs in our review. This professional grade optic for Nikon DX format digital SLRs provides an angle of view equivalent to a 25.5-82.5mm lens on a 35mm camera.

Is the 17

But when I first picked up the 17-55mm that's the subject of this review, the only other DX lenses were the D70 "kit lens" (18-70mm), the 10.5mm full frame fisheye, and the 12-24mm f/4 AF-S. Yes, the subject of this review, the 17-55mm f/2.8G DX is an old lens at this point.

Is the Nikon 17

The Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8 DX constant-aperture lens shows just what you get when spending money on premium optics: Top-notch performance across the board, with very good sharpness even when shooting wide open. (And at f/2.8, "wide open" on the 17-55 is wide indeed.)

When did the Nikon 17

Introduced on 22 July 2003, this heavy professional lens was too good to be appreciated on the DX DSLRs of the time, which had no more than 6 megapixels. Today, the much higher resolution of current DX cameras makes this lens much more relevant today than when it was new.

Is Nikon lens 17

The 17-55 is used quite often by photographers at weddings who shoot DX format. The Nikon does have much sturdier build quality than the Tamron. In terms of working through a crowd, etc, it really is a tank. There's no choice.

Does Canon 17

The fast f/2.8 aperture, combined with 3-stop image stabilization, makes the 17–55 very useful in low light compared to an unstabilized f/3.5–5.6 Canon EF-S 18–55mm lens, which is a frequent kit lens, and thus the 17–55 is much more suited for hand holding and available-light photography.
