Her dance training was not in vain – it laid a good foundation for her to shoot Kungfu films in her later career. The Qing court drama (historical drama set in the Qing Dynasty), which was adapted by Chiung Yao (琼瑶), a Taiwanese writer and producer who is widely considered the most popular romance novelist in the Chinese-speaking world, gained unprecedented success. It achieved ratings as high as 65% audience shares in China and was aired and rebroadcast in many Asian countries, making Zhao Wei a household name across the continent, even more than 20 years later. In 2001, Zhao Wei starred in Romance in the Rain (情深深雨濛濛 Qíng Shēnshēn Yǔ Méngméng), another TV drama adapted by Chiung Yao. And once again, Romance in the Rain became the annual ratings champion in China and was a mega-hit in East and Southeast Asia. Zhou Xun was born in 1974 to a middle-class family in Quzhou, Zhejiang Province. After finishing middle school, she went to Zhejiang Arts Institute to pursue her interest in dramatic arts. In 1991, director Xie Tieli (谢铁骊) discovered Zhou Xun from some calendars featuring her modeling photos and handpicked her for a role in the film Strange Tales Amongst Old and Desolate Tombs (古墓荒斋 Gǔ Mù Huāng Zhāi). The 2011 wuxia (martial-chivalric) film Flying Swords of Dragon Gate is a remake of the 1992 classic New Dragon Gate Inn (新龙门客栈 Xīn Lóngmén Kèzhàn) but takes place three years later.
