HP laptop not shutting down

I have a Pavilion which, sometimes, doesn't shut down properly. It is a fresh install of Windows 10. What happens is that if I turn on the laptop and then shut it down, it shuts down properly. However, if I start using the computer for a while (surfing the internet and so on), when I try to shut down it appears to be shutting down, and it does: the HDD light goes off, wi-fi card shuts down, monitor goes black but the computer stays on, and the fan keeps going. I have turned off fast startup and sleep mode from power options, but it doesn't change anything. I have 3 options in my mind:

  • Windows 10 related problem
  • Motherboard problem
  • Normal behaviour of the machine

Is it possible that the laptop stays on in order to cool the hardware before shutting down completely? That's something I've been thinking about. Thank you!

Your HP notebook might freeze for several reasons, including faulty or incompatible hardware. A freeze also frequently occurs when software becomes corrupt or severe strain on system resources is introduced. A simple reboot sometimes solves the problem, but rebooting is complicated when your keyboard, mouse and operating system are inoperative. During a freeze, your only recourse is to manually power down the system and reboot from there.

Press and hold the "Power" button for eight to 10 seconds. This forces the system to power off. This procedure works most of the time, even when the operating system is frozen. Proceed to Step 2 if this option does not work.

Turn the laptop over. Slide and hold the battery lock button to the release position.

Pull the battery toward you and lift it out of the HP notebook.

Wait 10 seconds and replace the battery.

Overall, having a laptop that won’t shut down properly is a fairly common occurrence that most of us will deal with some point or another. And in most cases, the fix to the issue is actually pretty simply.

**I have posted this in another area with the same issue**

YES!!!!! A Solution that worked.  Spread the news.  It has to do with the Intel Virtualization Tehnology. Didn't know what that was until this issue came up in Windows 10.

First, find out if this is your issue.

1. I installed the 'Intel Processor Identification Utility' directly from Intel.

2. After installation, open the program and go to the 'CPU Technologies' tab.

3. If it says 'YES' for Intel Virtualization Tehnology, proceed.

Solution...(at least on my system)

1. The next thing you have to do is go into the BIOS.  If you have not done this before, proceed at your own risk.

You need to restart the computer and enter the BIOS (for me I hit F10 at the HP screen)

2. Within the BIOS, there is an 'Advanced Options' section

3. In this section there is a line for 'Intel Virtualization Tehnology' and it will say enabled or disabled.  My computer said disabled.

4. If this is the case, change the option to 'ENABLED'; then SAVE and EXIT from the BIOS.

The Computer will restart and from that point on Shut Down, Sleep, etc. has worked.  WOW this was a frustrating issue. Almost went back to Windos 8.  I take no credit for this solution, I pieced it together from other posts on this issue.  Hope this helps.

Same problem here.  Would not of updated to Windows 10 if I new this would happen.

Tried the unchecking the "Turn on fast start-up" option in power setting, but does not work.

According to MS, there is some incompatible app preventing shutdown.

This issue is resolved in most cases by;

a) Removing the following HP programs from the programs and features list under the Control Panel

*note (HP ProtectTools Security Manager must be uninstalled last)

1) HP ProtectTools Device Access Manager

2) File Sanitizer For HP ProtectTools

3) Privacy Manager for ProtectTools

4) Theft Recovery

5) Drive Encryption for HP ProtectTools

6) HP ProtectTools Security Manager

Some machines will function ok after these are removed although some will require a Firmware update.

For example; If you have a 8300 Elite Microtower EnergyStar then you would further require the Windows 8 Bios update x86 or x64 etc. found on the HP Drivers & Software section of support... here as there are no Windows 10 Bios options.

@mebskivt please update your BIOS, Chipset and graphics card drivers using the HP website, if you aren't able to find the appropriate updates on it, please make use of the HP support assistant and install all relevant updates,

The option should then be available for us, let me know how that pans out.
