Reactivate a disabled Azure subscription

Your Azure subscription can get disabled because your credit has expired, you reached your spending limit, have an overdue bill, hit your credit card limit, or because the subscription was canceled by the Account Administrator. See what issue applies to you and follow the steps in this article to get your subscription reactivated.

Your credit is expired

When you sign up for an Azure free account, you get a Free Trial subscription, which provides you $200 Azure credit in your billing currency for 30 days and 12 months of free services. At the end of 30 days, Azure disables your subscription. Your subscription is disabled to protect you from accidentally incurring charges for usage beyond the credit and free services included with your subscription. To continue using Azure services, you must upgrade your subscription. After you upgrade, your subscription still has access to free services for 12 months. You only get charged for usage beyond the free service quantity limits.

You reached your spending limit

Azure subscriptions with credit such as Free Trial and Visual Studio Enterprise have spending limits on them. You can only use services up to the included credit. When your usage reaches the spending limit, Azure disables your subscription for the rest of that billing period. Your subscription is disabled to protect you from accidentally incurring charges for usage beyond the credit included with your subscription. Note

If you have a Free Trial subscription and you remove the spending limit, your subscription converts to an individual subscription with pay-as-you-go rates at the end of the Free Trial. You keep your remaining credit for the full 30 days after you created the subscription. You also have access to free services for 12 months.

Your bill is past due

The bill exceeds your credit card limit

To resolve the issue, switch to a different credit card. Or if you're representing a business, you can switch to pay by invoice.

The subscription was accidentally canceled

If you're the Account Administrator and accidentally canceled a pay-as-you-go subscription, you can reactivate it in the Azure portal.

  1. Sign in to the Azure portal.
  2. Go to Subscriptions and then select the canceled subscription.
  3. Select Reactivate.
  4. Confirm reactivation by selecting OK.

For other subscription types, contact support to have your subscription reactivated.

After reactivation

After your subscription is reactivated, there might be a delay in creating or managing resources. If the delay exceeds 30 minutes, contact Azure Billing Support for assistance. Most Azure resources automatically resume and don't require any action. However, we recommend that you check your Azure service resources and restart any that don't resume automatically.

Upgrade a disabled free account

If you use resources that aren’t free and your subscription gets disabled because you run out of credit, and then you upgrade your subscription, the resources get enabled after upgrade. Restore or remove a recently deleted user using Azure Active Directory

In this article

After you delete a user, the account remains in a suspended state for 30 days. During that 30-day window, the user account can be restored, along with all its properties. After that 30-day window passes, the permanent deletion process is automatically started.

You can view your restorable users, restore a deleted user, or permanently delete a user using Azure Active Directory (Azure AD) in the Azure portal.

Important

Neither you nor Microsoft customer support can restore a permanently deleted user.

Required permissions

You must have one of the following roles to restore and permanently delete users.

  • Global administrator

  • Partner Tier1 Support

  • Partner Tier2 Support

  • User administrator

View your restorable users

You can see all the users that were deleted less than 30 days ago. These users can be restored.

To view your restorable users

  1. Sign in to the Azure portal using a Global administrator account for the organization.

  2. Select Azure Active Directory, select Users, and then select Deleted users.

    Review the list of users that are available to restore.

Restore a recently deleted user

When a user account is deleted from the organization, the account is in a suspended state. All of the account's organization information is preserved. When you restore a user, this organization information is also restored.

Note

Once a user is restored, licenses that were assigned to the user at the time of deletion are also restored even if there are no seats available for those licenses. If you are then consuming more licenses more than you purchased, your organization could be temporarily out of compliance for license usage.

To restore a user

  1. On the Users - Deleted users page, search for and select one of the available users. For example, Mary Parker.

  2. Select Restore user.

Permanently delete a user

You can permanently delete a user from your organization without waiting the 30 days for automatic deletion. A permanently deleted user can't be restored by you, another administrator, nor by Microsoft customer support.

Note

If you permanently delete a user by mistake, you'll have to create a new user and manually enter all the previous information. For more information about creating a new user, see Add or delete users.

To permanently delete a user

  1. On the Users - Deleted users page, search for and select one of the available users. For example, Rae Huff.

  2. Select Delete permanently.

What happens when Azure trial expires?

Once your free services and quantities expire, you're charged pay-as-you-go rates for any services you're using. You can use the Azure portal to delete the resources for the services that you don't use. If you don't intend to use any Azure service, you can cancel your subscription.

What is difference between Azure subscription and tenant?

The primary purpose of a subscription is to provide a common billing paradigm for use of Azure services. A subscription might have one or more tenants, directories, and domains associated with it. A tenant is the organization that owns and manages a specific instance of Microsoft cloud services.

How do I get rid of my Azure tenant?

Sign in to the Azure AD admin center with an account that is the Global Administrator for your organization. Select Azure Active Directory. On a tenant Overview page, select Manage tenants. Select the check box for the tenant you want to delete, and select Delete.

Can you change the Azure AD tenant linked to an Azure subscription?

For Azure Cloud Solution Providers (CSP) subscriptions, changing the Azure AD directory for the subscription isn't supported.
